Bolton is situated in Greater Manchester, in the North West of England, approximately 10 miles northwest of Manchester city centre. As with other towns in the North West, the town played a significant role in the cotton and textile industry of the 19th century but can trace its textile roots back to the 14th century when Flemish weavers settled in the area.
Bury is similar to Bolton in terms of playing a significant role in the textile industry. The town was formed around an ancient market place dating back to the period of the Roman occupation of Britain.
