West Mercia Police - Wellington West and Rural Neighbourhood

West Mercia Police Information

West Mercia is the fourth largest geographic police area in England and Wales. The force area is divided into five territorial policing areas, which match the boundaries of our local authorities.

While West Mercia is predominantly rural, it also contains some densely populated urban areas and many market towns. To ensure we strike the right balance between addressing national and local policing priorities, the force focuses its activities on three priority areas:

  • Serving
  • Protecting the public
  • Making the difference

+
Gary Wade (Inspector)

Following an early career in licensing I joined West Mercia Police in 1990 immediately being posted to Wellington Police Station.

Within a short time I joined the Telford Armed Response Teams where I worked for the next 12 years prior to promotion to Shift Sergeant and a 4 year period within Telford Custody Unit.

In 2008 I joined the Force Professional Standards Department where I worked within the Misconduct arena for 5 years before returning permanently to Telford on promotion to Inspector in 2014 within the Telford Safer Neighbourhoods Team West.

Nigel Barnsley (Police Constable)
+
Zoe Beven (Police Community Support Officer)

Zoe joined Westmercia Police in 2009 and has worked as a PCSO from Wellington Police Station since then. Initially Zoe covered the area of Haygate & Ercall Local Policing Team. Since October 2013 this area has been merged in with Rural Wellington to become what is now Wellington West & Rural Safer Neighbourhood Team. If she is not in and around the Wellington Town she could be trekking across fields on Rural. Zoe enjoys chatting a lot so feel free to stop her on patrol if you would like to say hello, 6ft tall so you can't miss her :-)

+
Donna Picken (Police Community Support Officer)

Following a teaching career spanning 24 years, I joined West Mercia Police in April, 2018. I wanted to further serve local communities at 'grass roots' level and transfer skills I acquired in education to benefit  the general public.

I have been a Safer Schools officer since July 2018 and aim to be receptive to local community needs and to the needs of pupils and families within school.

+
Neil Clayton (Sergeant)

My name is PC Clayton and I am currently the Safer Neighbourhood team Police Officer for Brookside. I have worked the South Telford area for 13 years in my role as a response officer. I joined the SNT team in July 2015.

I look forward to continue meeting members of the community whilst out on foot patrol and when on the police bicycle. I understand that Brookside has a strong community spirit and has undergone recent redevelopment. There is an excellent Community Centre that is run by Big Local. I am passionate about doing the right thing for the community and have a desire to keep this area as safe as possible.

Priorities

3 May 2019

In Wellington Town there has been a lot of mess left everyday by rough sleepers.

This is affecting business and public coming to the town.

9 rough sleepers counted last week of which a few are begging around town on a daily basis.

Response (31 Aug 2019)

We have been liasing with the Wellington Town Council on  Wednesday 24th April, after a discussion with them and Telford and Wrekin Council the Contractors were brought in to clean up all the mess (mattresses / tables / bedding)

Wellington Local Policing team has also been out and given all the homeless they have come across a leaflet with services that could assist them in help for addictions, housing, support etc.

During a meeting about the Shop doorway ( The old Stead & Simpsons)  scissor shutters will be fitted to the shop front to stop the homeless coming back and using it as a bedroom / storage room. This work will be done week commencing 6th May.

Wellington Local Policing team advise public on a daily basis to report any begging by calling 101 and encourage the businesses to do the same to help combat the problem.

26 Apr 2017

We have traffic complaints and issues because of the amount of visitors and not enough parking which contributes to people not adhering to the basic rules in the highway code of not parking on double yellow lines.

22 May 2016

Large groups gathering within the square and people begging within the Town.
