Durham Constabulary Information
Durham Constabulary polices the area of County Durham and Darlington Borough, which together occupy an area of 2,232 sq. km. The area is predominantly rural, with more than half of its residents living in settlements of less than 10,000 people. There are 12 main towns and over 260 small towns and villages, many of which are former colliery villages. The population of the constabulary area is estimated to be 604,900 (ONS mid year estimate 2007), of which 1.2% are from ethnic minority groups
Peterlee (Wheatley Hill-Thornley) Neighbourhood
The neighbourhood police team works closely with the local community to keep the area safe and peaceful. We focus on preventing crime, tackling local issues, and building strong relationships with residents. Our duties often include patrolling the area, supporting vulnerable individuals, working with schools and local groups, and responding to concerns raised by the community. We do this by being visible and approachable.

| 10 Nov 2025 | Off Road motor bikes in and around Wheatley Hill and Thornley remain a priority as does antisocial behaviour (ASB). Off-road bikes used illegally often cause noise nuisance, danger to pedestrians and damage to local green spaces. Taking these vehicles off the road helps prevent accidents and restores peace in our neighbourhoods. Response (10 Nov 2025)The team continue to work with partners to gather intelligence regarding the anti social use of off road bikes in this area. We have seized off road bikes in the East Durham area after calls of Anti Social Behaviour in the area. |

Being visible helps us deter crime and support shop owners directly. Response (10 Nov 2025)The team take positive actions with all suspects identified and look to identify suspects at an early stage in order to prevent them reoffending. We also seek charges on the suspects in order for them to be charged with the offence and hopefully face prison terms. Furthermore we look to gain this evidence to apply for orders such as criminal behavior orders which prevents them from entering certain premises and also areas amongst other conditions. The team also have an active shop watch scheme where information and advice is shared between all attendees. |
