East Dorset police covers a large 136 square mile area & works hard to effectively engage with the public & work with partner agencies to resolve local policing priorities. The team is split into two strands, urban & rural. They both support each other, work with our response teams & Special constabulary & have a close working relationship with Dorset Police Rural crime team. They are further supported by many volunteers from the community.

The main policing hub is situated in Ferndown with Neighbourhood policing teams (NPT’s) spread out around the section, these are divided into two distinct teams, Urban & Rural.

The rural team covers pretty much all of the villages, and countryside west of the main urban towns in the section, including Sturminster Marshall & Sixpenny Handley.

The team will patrol the area & engage with the community in order to provide reassurance & to deter crime. They can also give salient advice on crime prevention for isolated locations or provide advice on security marking or watch schemes.

East Dorset has a very low crime rate, & is a great place to live. It attracts lots of visitors during the year, as such we want to keep both residents & visitors safe. We also want to continue our support of those affected by crime & to protect vulnerable persons in the community.

Your NPT would like to hear from you about any issues you may like to discuss, find out more about your NPT’s by using the links below. Contact us, so that we together with our partner agencies, can work together to make East Dorset a safer place to live

Priorities

1 Oct 2023Tackling Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB)     Our most recent NPT Priority Survey results continue to indicate that ASB is a top priority for the communities in Rural East Dorset. We know that ASB adversely affects people who live within our communities. The team will work in collaboration with our partners to explore possible solutions, in tackling ASB within our communities.
With the help of our communities, we will identify vulnerable people who may be susceptible to becoming a victim of ASB and this will help to us to inform, reassure and signpost them for the appropriate support. We will also target ASB hot spots and offenders, utilising ASB legislation and tools at our disposal. We will continue our patrols and partnership working to tackle ASB hotspots including community concerns in Sturminster Marshall and Alderholt during Bike Night.
1 Oct 2023Tackling Drug Dealing in the community     We will proactively target organised drug supply by developing and acting on community intelligence.
Our enforcement will be focused on the incidents that impact the most vulnerable.
We will carry out regular safe and well checks on vulnerable members of the community, in conjunction with partner agencies and our colleagues in other Police teams. As part of this we will signpost vulnerable victims to our partner agencies and services that can offer help, support and advice.
1 Oct 2023Tackling Acquisitive Crime and Burglaries.     Our current Burglary figures are low, however it remains a top three answer on our NPT Priority Surveys. Therefore we will continue to tackle acquisitive crime and identify any crime series that may arise in the coming weeks, as we enter into the Autumn and Winter months.
To help reduce the perception of crime within this field, we will ensure we communicate effective crime prevention advice and also highlight police enforcement through the use of Social Media, as well as working with local drug and alcohol teams to try and divert and prevent persons from turning to crime. We will also hold regular engagement opportunities where our communities can attend and learn more about burglary crime prevention.  We will also work with our Rural Crime Team to offer advice and education at engagement opportunities. We regularly work together to tackle rural crime and this will continue towards this priority.
