PARLIAMENTARY DETAILS
Rachael Maskell MP for York Central Constituency

York Central Parliamentary Constituency: An Overview

York Central is a parliamentary constituency located in the heart of the historic city of York, North Yorkshire, England. This constituency is distinct as it encompasses the city centre and several surrounding areas, forming an urban hub amidst the broader region of North Yorkshire.

Historical Context

The York Central constituency was established in 2010 following boundary revisions. It was created alongside York Outer, from the former City of York constituency, in order to provide more balanced representation in light of population changes and to meet the evolving administrative needs of the area.

Political Representation

Since its creation, York Central has predominantly been a stronghold for the Labour Party. The first MP for the constituency was Hugh Bayley, representing the Labour Party, and he served until 2015. Following Hugh Bayley, Rachael Maskell, also of the Labour Party, has been the sitting MP.

Area and Demographics

York is known for its rich history, architectural heritage, including York Minster, and its well-preserved city walls. The area is predominantly white, with individuals from various socio-economic backgrounds. The population is generally younger compared to the national average, owing to the student population.
