The constituency of Wythenshawe and Sale East was created in 1997, formed primarily from parts of the former constituencies of Manchester Wythenshawe and Davyhulme.

Historically, Wythenshawe and Sale East has been a stronghold for the Labour Party, with Paul Goggins serving as the Member of Parliament from its creation in 1997 until his death in 2014. Following a by-election in 2014, Mike Kane, also of the Labour Party, has represented the constituency.
