Wyre Forest Parliamentary Constituency: An Overview

Wyre Forest is a parliamentary constituency located in the county of Worcestershire, in the West Midlands region of England. It encompasses the district of Wyre Forest, which includes the towns of Kidderminster, Stourport-on-Severn, and Bewdley, and is named after the ancient Forest of Wyre.

Historical Context

Created in 1983, Wyre Forest has witnessed shifting political allegiances, reflecting the evolving political landscape of the region. The constituency was initially represented predominantly by Conservative MPs. However, it has also seen notable independent and Labour representation.

Political Representation

From its inception until 1997, the Conservative Party held the seat, with Esmond Bulmer being the first MP. The scene transformed dramatically in 2001 when Dr. Richard Taylor, an Independent, won the seat on a local hospital campaign and held it until 2010. The Conservatives regained the seat in 2010 with Mark Garnier representing the constituency.

Area and Demographics

The area is characterized by a mix of urban, suburban, and rural settings, and the River Severn runs through parts of the constituency. The constituency predominantly has a white British population, with a variety of age groups and socio-economic statuses.
