Obesity: Children (3 September 2018)

Question Asked

To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what comparative assessment he has made of the level of obesity in children in (a) 2009 and (b) 2017.

Answer

No comparative assessment of the level of child obesity in 2009 and 2017 has been made.

Data from the Health Survey for England 2016 indicate that 15.7% of children aged 2-15 were classified as obese using population monitoring thresholds in England in 2009. 16.0% of children aged 2-15 were classified as obese in 2016. Data for 2017 data are not yet available.

16.1% of boys aged 2-15 were classified as obese in 2009, and 15.3% of girls. In 2016 15.9% of boys aged 2-15 were classified as obese, and 16.1% of girls.
