Self-assessment (2 May 2018)

To ask Mr Chancellor of the Exchequer, what the average length of time was for HMRC to notify people of their failure to complete their tax self-assessment by the deadline in each of the last three years.

Initial filing penalties for those customers who have failed to send their SA returns in on time are issued each year starting 30 days after the final filing date of 31^st January. For operational reasons, the issue of the notices is staggered over a period of a few days; all penalty notices are issued by the end of the first week of March each year.
