PARLIAMENTARY WRITTEN QUESTION
Diabetes (13 April 2018)

Question Asked

To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, whether his Department has made an assessment of the effect of the soft drinks industry levy on diabetics who may regularly buy drinks that are high in sugar.

Asked by:
Dr Rosena Allin-Khan (Labour)

Answer

There has been no central assessment of the effect of the soft drinks industry levy on diabetics. Whilst we recognise soft drinks with high levels of added sugar may have a role to play in raising blood glucose levels for people living with type 1 diabetes, this must be balanced against the need to protect the nation’s children from other serious conditions and diseases linked to high consumption of sugar including obesity and tooth decay.
