Circuses: Animal Welfare (20 December 2017)

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, when he plans to review and report on The Welfare of Wild Animals in Travelling Circuses (England) Regulations 2012; and what assessment the has made of the potential merits of introducing legislative proposals banning the use of wild animals in circuses.

The Government’s policy is to introduce via primary legislation a ban on the use of wild animals in travelling circuses as soon as parliamentary time allows. The Welfare of Wild Animals in Travelling Circuses (England) Regulations 2012 were introduced as a temporary measure while a bill was enacted. We intend to publish the Post Implementation Review of the 2012 Regulations in early 2018.
