To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what assessment he has made of the potential benefits to the economy of (a) Essex and (b) the UK of a passing loop north of Witham on the Great Eastern Main Line.

Answer

The proposal to install passing loops north of Witham on the Great Eastern Main Line is one of a series of potential capacity upgrades for the line. The proposals are at an early stage of development, with initial feasibility work yet to be carried out.
