PARLIAMENTARY WRITTEN QUESTION
Government Departments: Food (23 November 2017)

Question Asked

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, what assessment he has made of the effect of the revised Eatwell Guide on public procurement decisions on food and drink in Government Departments.

Asked by:
Kerry McCarthy (Labour)

Answer

The Eatwell Guide aims to assist the population in choosing a varied and balanced diet to meet latest Government dietary advice. It reflects the most up to date recommendations including those from the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition on the consumption of sugars and fibre. The guide is suitable for everyone over the age of five years.

Procurement of food within central Government Departments is determined through the Government Buying Standards for Food and Catering Services, which include a set of minimum mandatory standards for inclusion in tender specifications and contract performance conditions. The standards are still to be aligned with latest dietary recommendations.
