PARLIAMENTARY WRITTEN QUESTION
Syria: Internally Displaced People (23 October 2017)

Question Asked

To ask the Secretary of State for International Development, what role the Government plans to play in facilitating the safe return home of internally displaced people in Syria; and what criteria will be used to establish whether their homes are safe enough to return to.

Asked by:
Alison McGovern (Labour)

Answer

Following the liberation of Raqqa City, we are helping to clear landmines and explosives to enable those displaced to return to their homes there safely as soon as possible, however for the majority of internally displaced people to return home safely there must be an end to the conflict and a credible political settlement. This is the only viable path towards the peace and security that the Syrian people deserve. In the meantime, the UK is providing food, healthcare, water and other life-saving relief to vulnerable Syrians, including internally displaced people, across the country.
