PARLIAMENTARY WRITTEN QUESTION
Food: Waste (6 October 2017)

Question Asked

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what steps he is taking to encourage supermarkets to publish food waste data and audited annual breakdowns of food waste.

Asked by:
Kerry McCarthy (Labour)

Answer

We do not currently have plans to require food businesses to publicly report food waste as reporting is already taking place under Courtauld 2025. The current approach to reporting under Courtauld 2025 is that aggregate figures are produced, maintaining the confidentiality of signatories. However, we note that retailers such as Sainsbury’s and Tesco have chosen to publish their food waste data.
