PARLIAMENTARY WRITTEN QUESTION
Iraq (8 July 2014)

Question Asked

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what assessment he has made of the implications for his policies of the rise of Islamic terrorism in Northern Iraq.

Asked by:
Andrew Rosindell (Conservative)

Answer

Our objective is to see a prosperous and stable Iraq as part of a stable region. The advance by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in Iraq in June threatens this. Reported atrocities of summary executions, sexual violence and attacks against religious buildings by ISIL all go to show the importance of taking a strong stand against the extremists. In the immediate term the UK has provided £5 million of humanitarian aid to alleviate the suffering of those affected by recent violence. During his recent visit to Iraq, the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my Right Hon. Friend the Member for Richmond (Yorks) (Mr Hague) emphasised the importance of unity and political inclusion to make an effective security response possible.
