PARLIAMENTARY WRITTEN QUESTION
Tax Allowances: Charities (22 June 2017)

Question Asked

To ask Mr Chancellor of the Exchequer, how many people received income tax exemption for the income of charities in (a) 2014-15, (b) 2015-16 and (c) 2016-17.

Asked by:
Peter Dowd (Labour)

Answer

It is estimated that around 740,000 people received income tax relief for donations to charity for tax year 2014-15. It is projected that 764,000 and 784,000 people will receive income tax relief for donations to charities for tax years 2015-16 and 2016-17 respectively.

These estimates are based on the 2014-15 Survey of Personal Incomes, and projected to 2015-16 and 2016-17 using economic assumptions consistent with the Office for Budget Responsibility’s March 2017 economic and fiscal outlook.
