PARLIAMENTARY WRITTEN QUESTION
Roads: Tunnels (25 November 2016)

Question Asked

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what progress has been made on the consideration of the feasibility of a road tunnel between Sheffield and Manchester; and what the timetable is for future such consideration.

Asked by:
Mr Clive Betts (Labour)

Answer

The Stage Three report on the Trans Pennine Tunnel Strategic Study was published on 28 November 2016. The report sets out the strategic case for a new link between the M60 and M1 and identified five potential route options. However, further work is required to understand fully the user and wider economic benefits of such a link. This work will take place during 2017.
