Peat: Licensing (3 November 2016)

Question Asked

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, how many peat extraction licenses are currently valid; and when those licenses are scheduled to expire.

Answer

Data on extraction licences are not held centrally. However, Natural England estimates that there are currently 29 valid peat extraction licences. All of the licences expire by 2042, with five expiring before 2020, six expiring between 2021 and 2030, four expiring between 2031 and 2040, and the remaining 14 expiring in 2042.
