PARLIAMENTARY WRITTEN QUESTION
Macedonia: Human Rights (7 July 2015)

Question Asked

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what representations he has made to the government of Macedonia on (a) mass surveillance, (b) individual independence and (c) freedom of speech.

Asked by:
Pat McFadden (Labour)

Answer

We, together with EU and international partners, have consistently set out our concerns about breaches of fundamental rights, freedom of speech and the politicisation of institutions to Prime Minister Gruevski and other representatives of the Macedonian government. The British Embassy in Skopje demarched, along with members of the Quint (US, EU delegation, France, Germany and Italy) Prime Minister Gruevski in March and again in May in view of the ongoing political crisis in Macedonia. I discussed the situation in Macedonia with Foreign Minister Poposki in Brussels on 19 May.
