Question Asked

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what steps he has taken to encourage research and development into the production of new diesel multiple units by UK-based manufacturers.

Answer

The department sponsors the rail industry’s FutureRailway programme which supports research, development and demonstration of innovative rail solutions. Recent FutureRailway initiatives, which have secured widespread interest and engagement from UK based suppliers, include a £4.5m competition to develop more energy efficient, self-powered trains and a successful trial of a battery powered train.

The Department for Transport is also working with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and the Rail Supply Group to strengthen the UK rail supply chain – including the manufacture of rolling stock - so that it is better able to win work here and abroad.
