PARLIAMENTARY WRITTEN QUESTION
(9 September 2026)

Question Asked

To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, whether prisoners who have assaulted a prison guard remain eligible for early release, and how many prisoners set to be released in the first ten tranches have previously assaulted a prison guard.

Asked by:
Nick Timothy (Conservative)

Answer

We punish prisoners who are violent towards staff by giving them penalties that can include adding days onto their sentence. We doubled the maximum number of additional days that Independent Adjudicators can impose for a single incident of behaviour from 42 to 84 days as of 2 September this year.

We have published the estimated numbers of offenders to be released on the first day of each tranche: Estimated progression model tranche release volumes - GOV.UK
