PARLIAMENTARY WRITTEN QUESTION
(2 September 2026)

Question Asked

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, how many proposed data centres have (a) requested and (b) received an electricity-grid connection offer; what their combined requested capacity is; and what assessment has been made of the potential effect of those requests on connection dates for (i) housing developments, (ii) manufacturing businesses and (iii) low-carbon electricity generation.

Asked by:
Wendy Morton (Conservative)

Answer

Data collected in 2025 and published by the National Energy System Operator shows 72.8 GW of capacity allocated to data centres in the GB connection queue across transmission and distribution. It is not currently possible to provide a count of individual projects.

Government recently consulted on measures to manage the current oversubscription of data centre connections, which is contributing to connection delays for demand projects of all types, and will publish its response in due course.
