PARLIAMENTARY WRITTEN QUESTION
(1 September 2026)

Question Asked

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what assessment she has made of the potential impact of the Zero Emission Vehicle mandate on the competitiveness of UK-based vehicle manufacturers relative to Chinese vehicle manufacturers; and whether her Department has assessed the extent to which the mandate may affect the market share of Chinese-manufactured vehicles in the UK.

Asked by:
Mr Richard Holden (Conservative)

Answer

The Government is backing the UK’s transition to electric with £7.5 billion to grow the market, boost electric vehicle manufacturing and build up the charging network.

In the context of the global challenges facing the automotive sector, the Government continues to engage with UK-based manufacturers on a regular basis to ensure that the transition delivers for them, including as part of the Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate Review, which is currently subject to consultation.
