PARLIAMENTARY WRITTEN QUESTION
Tobacco: Smuggling (25 November 2014)

Question Asked

To ask Mr Chancellor of the Exchequer, what recent estimate has he made of the cost to the public purse of organised crime associated with the trade in illicit tobacco.

Asked by:
Mark Garnier (Conservative)

Answer

The most recent estimates of the total revenue losses associated with the tobacco illicit market were published on 16 October in the report ‘Tobacco tax gap estimates 2013-14’.

This can be accessed on the HMRC website:

https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/364011/141016_Tobacco_Tax_Gap_2014.pdf

It is not possible to disaggregate losses to organised crime from total losses.
