PARLIAMENTARY WRITTEN QUESTION
Overseas Students: India (9 May 2023)

Question Asked

To ask the Secretary of State for Education, if she will make an estimate of the contribution to GDP of international students from India.

Asked by:
Navendu Mishra (Labour)

Answer

India is one of the five priority countries in the government’s International Education Strategy. We are proud to have hosted 126,535 Indian students in the UK in the 2020/21 academic year.

This reflects the commitment we made in the International Education Strategy to host at least 600,000 international students per year. We want to continue to attract the brightest students from all over the world, which delivers growth at home and is good for our universities.

The department does not break down the value of education exports by country, although it is clear that international students make a significant economic and cultural contribution to the UK’s higher education (HE) sector.

Statistics published by the department show that, in 2020, total revenue from education-related exports and transnational education activity was £25.6 billion. Total revenue from HE was £19.5 billion.
