To ask the Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, if his Department will make an estimate of the number of people who are in council tax arrears as of 5 December 2022.

Answer
Local councils are responsible for the collection of council tax and any arrears. The Government does not collect data on the number of people who are in council tax arrears. Data on the level of council tax arrears in England can be found in Table 7 here. Further to the Taking Control of Goods (Fees) Regulations 2014, the Department has published best practice guidance on council tax collection.
