PARLIAMENTARY WRITTEN QUESTION
Council Tax: Arrears (5 December 2022)

Question Asked

To ask the Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, whether his Department has made an assessment of the additional cost incurred by those in council tax arrears when a local authority uses a debt collection agent.

Asked by:
Navendu Mishra (Labour)

Answer

Local councils are responsible for the collection of council tax and any arrears. The Government does not collect data on the number of people who are in council tax arrears. Data on the level of council tax arrears in England can be found in Table 7 here. Further to the Taking Control of Goods (Fees) Regulations 2014, the Department has published best practice guidance on council tax collection.
