PARLIAMENTARY WRITTEN QUESTION
Cancer: Diagnosis (20 July 2022)

Question Asked

To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what steps his Department is taking to increase the number of cancer diagnoses made at stage one.

Asked by:
Feryal Clark (Labour)

Answer

The NHS Long Term Plan set out the ambition for 75% of cancers to be diagnosed at stage one or two by 2028.

The NHS Cancer Programme aims to increase awareness of the signs and symptoms of cancer and encourage people to seek advice where appropriate; modernise existing cancer screening programmes and screen or monitor those most at risk due to genetic or lifestyle factors; and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of general practitioner referrals. The Programme also seeks to maximise genomic testing capability and explore new technologies such as ‘liquid biopsy’, increase diagnostic capacity and streamline care pathways to ensure that a definitive diagnosis is made within 28 days.
