PARLIAMENTARY WRITTEN QUESTION
Bowel Cancer: Diagnosis (14 June 2022)

Question Asked

To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what steps his Department is taking to improve early-stage diagnosis of bowel cancer.

Asked by:
Feryal Clark (Labour)

Answer

The NHS Long Term Plan sets out the ambition for 75% of cancers to be diagnosed at stage 1 or 2 by 2028, including bowel cancer. NHS England and NHS Improvement are extending the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme to include 50 to 59 year olds in a phased approach over four years, which commenced in 2021/22 for those aged 56 years old.

The call for evidence to inform the forthcoming 10 Year Cancer Plan contained a section on the early diagnosis of cancer and officials are currently analysing the responses received. The Plan will set out how we will improve cancer services and further details will be available in due course.
