Question Asked

To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what steps his Department is taking to identify new covid-19 variants at borders.

Answer

The UK Health Security Agency continues to undertake regular monitoring of United Kingdom and international genomic data to detect and characterise new variants. If a new variant is detected by surveillance systems, a risk assessment will be conducted to establish its severity, which will inform the level of response.
