Compulsorily Detained Psychiatric Patients: Restraint Techniques (10 January 2022)

Question Asked

To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, how many people have been subject to restraint in inpatient mental health units, in each year since 2010.

Answer

A table showing the number of people subject to restraint in inpatient mental health or learning disability and autism services from 2016/17 to 2020/21 is attached. This information is not held prior to 2016.

The use of restraint should only ever be used as a last resort. The Mental Health Units (Use of Force) Act 2018, its accompanying statutory guidance and response to the public consultation for this guidance was published on 7 December 2021.
