One Parent Family Charter of Rights (4 July 1990)
Motion Details
That this House congratulates Gingerbread on the launch of its One Parent Family Charter of Rights; agrees that lone parents are equal citizens and that they and their children have the right to participate equally in society, lone parents have the right to a freedom of choice as to whether to stay at home with their children or to work, lone parents have the right to good quality, easily accessible and affordable child care for children up to the age of 14 years, lone parents and their children have the right to a level of income which enables them to lead a full and contented life, lone parents and their children have the right to good quality housing and parity with two parent families in allocation of council accommodation, lone parents have the right to a fairer and more sympathetic legal system with conciliation services and a family court, lone parents and their children have the right to a free, efficient and accessible health service, lone parents have the right to training opportunities to make the most of their educational potential and earning capacity, children of lone parents have equal rights in education including higher education and lone parents have the right to access to information on welfare benefits and other services available to them; and calls upon the Government to bring in policies aimed at implementing the charter.
