PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
SOUTH AFRICA:CODESA (17 May 1992)
Motion Details
That this House expresses its grave concern at the deadlock in the negotiating process at the Convention for a Democratic South Africa; recognises that the position adopted by President de Klerk and the ruling National Party that a 75 per cent. majority vote be required to approve a new constitution amounts to a white veto over constitutional change and is therefore totally unacceptable; reaffirms its support for a fully democratic constitution and therefore urges Her Majesty's Government to intervene with the South African Government in order that it abides by its commitment to a united, non-racial and democratic South Africa as expressed in the Declaration adopted at the first plenary session of CODESA in December 1991.
