PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
HONGKONG AND SHANGHAI BANKING CORPORATION AND MIDLAND BANK (11 May 1992)
Motion Details
That this House notes the offer made by Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Holdings for the Midland Bank; believes that any reduction in competition between the clearing banks would significantly affect consumer choice, and hence be unwelcome to banking customers, especially small businesses; welcomes HSBC'S intentions to retain the Midland Bank's identity and to ensure that it continues to act as a strong and competitive force in British banking; and believes that the creation of a strong British bank of world stature will strengthen London as Europe's pre-eminent financial centre.
