PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
ANIMAL WELFARE (21 June 1992)
Motion Details
That this House is concerned that primates indigenous to countries from which they are exported for research, suffer greatly due to indiscriminate trapping methods, inadequate housing and care at breeding and holding centres, as well as during transport; is appalled that up to 80 per cent. of wild-caught primates die before they reach British laboratories; is further dismayed that primates held in United Kingdom supply and research establishments are also kept in cramped and unsuitable conditions; notes that there is also concern over how appropriate or necessary such research is; and therefore calls upon Her Majesty's Government to use its powers under the Endangered Species (Import and Export) Act 1976 and the Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 to prevent animals being supplied from these sources to the United Kingdom and to review the use, care and handling of research primates.
