PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
MAMTA CHOPRA (10 June 1992)
Motion Details
That this House backs the right to stay in the United Kingdom of Mamta Chopra, a 23 year-old woman of Indian nationality who fled her marital home in the United Kingdom because of violence; believes it morally wrong for a victim of violence in marriage to be doubly victimised by being forced to leave the United Kingdom after living here for more than three years; notes Mamta and her family, including unmarried brothers and sisters, would face hostility and prejudice if Mamta was forced to return to India; congratulates Mamta for building an independent life in Britain, learning English, and obtaining experience and qualifications enabling her to carry out valuable community work with toddlers and children, especially those of Asian origin; and believes Her Majesty's Government must come to terms with the incidence of breakdown in marriage and make proper arrangements for all compassionate circumstances to be fully and properly considered and sympathy and understanding shown to those who enter the United Kingdom genuinely and legally and whose marriage breaks down.
