PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
Closure of Hanson Tobacco Factories (20 June 1990)

Motion Details

That this House views with grave concern the decision of the Hanson Corporation to close its tobacco factories at Glasgow, Bristol and Ipswich, resulting in the loss of over 1,300 highly skilled and loyal workers; notes that the Hanson Corporation announced that it has ú6.4 billion in a fund for purchasing and asset stripping other companies; further notes that Hanson Corporation has benefitted from the massive profits created by the workers in the tobacco industry; and therefore calls on Hanson Corporation to use these funds to diversify production, thus creating alternative employment for those made redundant from tobacco factory closures in the same local communities.
