PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
BRITISH AEROSPACE GREATER MANCHESTER (23 September 1992)

Motion Details

That this House deeply regrets the decision of BAe to reduce its labour force at Woodford and Chadderton by over 1000; believes this is a direct result of the United Kingdom Government's neglect of British industry; notes that BAe was created by a Labour Government, that only its success as a nationally-owned industry enabled the Tories to sell it off, and that a lack of Government support has meant that BAe can only survive in partnership with a state-supported overseas company; notes the stark contrast between the United Kingdom Government's lack of concern in helping BAe and the Taiwan Government's desire to invest in aircraft manufacture; and calls on the United Kingdom Government to have urgent talks with BAe to devise a strategy to ensure aircraft manufacture is retained in the United Kingdom and in Greater Manchester, to take immediate steps to offer redundant workers good retraining and to bring in new measures for school leavers to ensure that they can get the quality training that was formerly offered by BAe at Woodford and Chadderton and to give all Greater Manchester intermediate development status so that new jobs can be created for the 1000 employees made directly redundant and the many more people who will indirectly lose employment.
