PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
WELFARE OF ZOO ANIMALS (3 December 1992)
Motion Details
That this House commends and supports the EC on its efforts to introduce a directive to establish minimum welfare standards for wild animals housed in the Community's 1,000 or more zoos; calls upon the Government to speedily approve the EC directive to ensure that such welfare minimums are in place at the earliest opportunity; requests that all relevant bodies, including the European Parliament, national governments and the Council of Ministers, seek the inclusion as part of the directive, and subsequent national legislation, of provisions for the care welfare, administration and, where possible, relocation of animals from collections that do not attain the minimum standard required into more appropriate licensed facilities; and therefore commends and supports the suggestion made by The Born Free Foundation, that a zoo operator's bond be established to provide appropriate funding and hence time for the responsible dispersal of closed collections.
