PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
NORWEGIAN WHALING (24 November 1992)
Motion Details
That this House welcomes Mrs Gro Harlem Brundtland the Norwegian Prime Minister to this country to discuss Norway's application for membership of the European Community with the Prime Minister; is aware of overwhelming British and European Community public opinion which is opposed to the slaughter of whales; is dismayed by Norway's determination to resume commercial whaling in defiance of a worldwide ban imposed by the International Whaling Commission in 1986 and angered that Norwegian whalers have killed over 900 whales since the ban was introduced including 93 whales this year for so-called scientific research; believes that the Prime Minister should act upon a public petition with half a million signatures delivered to 10 Downing Street calling for him to support the International Whaling Commission ban by proposing complementary legislation within the EC creating a European whale sanctuary and banning whaling forever; and calls upon the Prime Minister to inform Mrs Brundtland that Norway must renounce its whaling activities before consideration can be given to their application for membership of the European Community.
