PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
MR ALAN CLARK (11 January 1993)

Motion Details

That this House considers that the view expressed recently by Mr Alan Clark, a former Conservative Defence Minister, that Britain should have negotiated with Hitler following the fall of France in 1940 is not only naive but also deeply insulting to the ordinary men and women of Britain who bravely stood alone against the Nazi bully and perpetrator of mass genocide; further believes that the House of Commons of 1940 to 1945 which supported and sustained the war time coalition led by Winston Churchill and Clement Attlee, reflected the united and inflexible resolve of the British people to fight on, regardless of the odds, in order to try and achieve a better world at home and abroad based upon principles of justice and peace and which in their domestic form were to be subsequently outlined in 1943 in the recommendations of William Beveridge; regrets that these goals for which they made great sacrifices have not, to say the least, been wholly achieved or nurtured by subsequent generations; but is nevertheless firm in the view that nothing would have been worse that the new dark age that would have descended upon Europe had Britain capitulated to Hitler and his gang of dictators.
