PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
REDUCTION OF VAT ON SANITARY PROTECTION PRODUCTS (25 February 1993)
Motion Details
That this House congratulates the CWS on its decision to sell its sanitary protection products at a minus VAT price; calls upon all other manufacturers and retailers to emulate their action; draws attention to the fact that 15 million women in Britain, many of whom live on very low incomes, have to pay 17.5 per cent. VAT for sanitary protection products because such products have not been classified as 'socially useful' to date; and calls on the Chancellor of the Exchequer to give urgent consideration to reducing the amount of VAT levied to the lowest possible level by classifying these products as 'socially useful', and to lobby the EC for sanitary protection products to be exempted from VAT in all member countries.
