PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
MERSEYSIDE PENSIONERS' PETITION (19 February 1993)
Motion Details
That this House congratulates the Merseyside and North-West pensioners on collecting more than 20,000 signatures on a petition calling for an end to the imposition of standing charges for gas, electricity, water, and telephone bills on pensioners; hopes that the Prime Minister will take note of the petition delivered to him at 10, Downing Street; believes with them that such charges should be met out of the profits of the industries and not out of increased charges to other customers; and calls upon the Government to end this regressive form of taxation which bears most heavily on the poorest and most disadvantaged in Britain.
