PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
TAIWAN AND THE ILLEGAL TRADE IN RHINO HORN (10 February 1993)

Motion Details

That this House deplores the illegal trade in rhino horn which has reduced the worldwide population of rhinos to less than 10,500 animals and incurred loss of human life in range states attempting to protect their rhino populations; while welcoming Taiwan's statements of concern and intention to educate its public, notes that Taiwan is the main centre for illegal trade in rhino horn and a significant consuming market; calls on Taiwan to implement fully CITES recommendations concerning rhino horn and the products of other endangered species, including seizure and destruction of rhino horn stocks as recommended by CITES in resolution Conf. 6.10 and SC 28.15; calls on Taiwan to enforce effectively its own legislation which bans import, export and domestic sale of rhino horn; and urges Taiwan to support rhino conservation programmes in African and Asian range states which have suffered severe losses as a result of the illegal trade in rhino horn.
