PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
CRIME AND PUNISHMENT (4 February 1993)

Motion Details

That this House notes that in 1991 almost 6,000 firms were caught committing the criminal offence of illegal underpayment, that only 15 firms were prosecuted and that of these the penalties ranged from admonishment to a paltry fine for a few hundred pounds; further notes with surprise that no honourable Member or Right honourable Member who supports the abolition of wages councils has come forward to volunteer to live for a week on a wages council rate of pay, as invited by EDM 850 of 16th November 1992; and wonders why the victims of these crimes, far from receiving support, are now to be at the mercy of thugs who will intimidate or dismiss them if they try to seek better pay or claim unpaid back pay.
