PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
DESIGN FAILURES OF BULK CARRIERS (16 March 1993)
Motion Details
That this House expresses its serious concern at the reported loss of the vessel 'Gold Bond Conveyor' and extends its sympathy to the families of the 33 crew members reported to be drowned; notes that the MV 'Gold Bond Conveyor' is a bulk carrier similar in design to the MV 'Derbyshire' that sank with the loss of its 44 crew members in the South China Sea in 1980; draws the attention of the Secretary of State for Transport to the number of bulk carriers that have suffered a similar fate that points to a design/structural fault in these ships; and demands that an inquiry into the loss of the 'Derbyshire' should be undertaken to avoid further loss of seafarers' lives.
