PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
FAMAGUSTA AND VAROSHA (3 May 1993)

Motion Details

That this House welcomes the agreement to resume the Cyprus talks in New York before the end of May; notes the recommendation in Security Council Resolution 550 (1984) that Varosha should be brought within the area of control of UNFICYP, and that this is reiterated as one of the confidence-building measures recommended in Security Council Resolution 789 (1992); believes that the opening up of Famagusta, including the town of Varosha, would be an appropriate means of building confidence and trust between the Greek and Turkish communities of Cyprus and thus facilitate the solution of the Cyprus problem; and therefore calls upon Her Majesty's Government to give all possible support to the proposal that, as part of a number of mutually beneficial measures, Famagusta, including the town of Varosha, should be transferred in entirety to the protection of UNFICYP, that urgent measures be taken to commence the restoration of the fabric and infrastructure of the town, that notice should be given to the citizens of that town that they will be allowed to return to their homes, and that as much official encouragement and support as possible be given to the development of social and commercial contacts between the two communities.
