PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
UEFA Women's Euro 2022 and school sports facilities (4 September 2022)

Motion Details

That this House congratulates the England women’s national football team, the Lionesses, on their historic victory at the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022; celebrates their success as the first English senior national football team to win a European football championship; notes the lasting legacy this will have for young women and girls across the country and the nationwide momentum behind the women’s game; further notes with regret that 94 schools across England have sold playing fields or other outdoor sports facilities since January 2015, impacting an estimated 75,683 pupils; raises concerns over the number of playing fields sold by schools in Kent, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire in particular; notes with despair the loss of opportunity for the next generation of footballers that the sale of these playing fields represents; calls on the Department for Education to commit to providing every child with access to outdoor sports facilities at school; and further calls on the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport to support community bids to acquire and maintain playing fields.
