PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
CHILDREN AND TOBACCO (27 April 1993)
Motion Details
That this House welcomes the publication by the Royal College of Physicians of the Charter, Children's Right to Freedom from Tobacco, which states that children have the right to be free from the effects of tobacco when in their mother's womb, to be brought up in a home that is smoke free, to expect that doctors, teachers and all those caring for them will set a good example by not smoking, to schools, youth clubs and public places that are smoke free, to be taught about the impact of smoking on health and well being, to be taught how to recognise and resist pressures to smoke, to not be sold cigarettes and other tobacco products, to be helped to remain non-smokers by the high cost of cigarettes, to be free from any form of tobacco advertising and promotion, to live in a community where non-smoking is a normal way of life for all age groups, and to expect that public policy will reflect these rights; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to adopt this Charter as an essential step to protect all children from the effects of tobacco smoking.
